Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old in Long Beach, California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as nurse, so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages by means of artwork. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
