After graduating, Burrell spent one year studying in the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners and worked in the Umbrian restaurant La Taverna del Lupo as and Tuscany's La Bottega del 30, a Michelin-starred restaurant. The time she spent in Italy allowed her to comprehend and appreciate Italian tradition and philosophy, which has had an impact on her own perception of food. Burrell was a part of the Garden of Dreams Foundation Advisory Board to improve the lives of children who face problems. She is also a Juvenile Research Foundation celebrity ambassador who promotes awareness of children with diabetes. In her capacity as a guest speaker and mentor Burrell travels throughout the United States to discuss her passion for cooking as well as her profession.
